Psychogenic sneezing and yawning.

چکیده

A DIVORCED Negro woman of about 40, complaining of violent spasms of sneezing and a compression sensation in the chest, was referred to me for diagnosis and to determine whether a causal relationship existed between her condition and the substances with which she worked. The claimant stated that she began sneezing on the first day that she worked with a gunpowder mixture. Occasionally the attacks were interrupted by yawning. Her condition became gradually worse, and by the third day the attacks became so violent and continuous that she required emergency care by the company doctor. The physician administered a general anaesthesia (chloroform) and the patient was relieved of her symptoms for about three hours, after which the attacks recurred. The next day she was seen by her private doctor, who advised her to give up her job since he was of the opinion that her symptoms were caused by the inhalation of the dusts of the gunpowder. She was under his care for a period of about three weeks, receiving vasoconstrictor and local anaesthetic drugs to her nose and throat. This was discontinued because it failed to relieve the patient.

Laughing, Crying, Sneezing and Yawning: Automatic Voice Driven Animation of Non-Speech Articulations

In this paper a technique is presented for learning audio-visual correlations in non-speech related articulations such as laughs, cries, sneezes and yawns, such that accurate new visual motions may be created given just audio. Our underlying model is data-driven and provides reliable performance given voices the system is familiar with as well as new voices. We demonstrate how performance accur...

Role of the adrenergic system in physostigmine-induced yawning

In this study the effect of adrenergic receptor agonists and antagonists on physostigmine induced yawning was investigated. Intraperitoneal injection of different doses of physostigmine (0.03, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg) caused yawning in white rats. The greatest response was seen at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg physostigmine. Phenylephrine, an α1 agonist, and clonidine, an α2 agonist, led to a decrease in...

Yawning Detection Sensitivity and Yawning Contagion

Contagious yawning-the urge to yawn when thinking about, listening to, or viewing yawning-is a well-documented phenomenon in humans and animals. The reduced yawn contagion observed in the autistic population suggested that it might be empathy related; however, it is unknown whether such a connection applies to nonclinical populations. We examined influences from both empathy (i.e., autistic tra...
